Boynton Beach’s Due South Brewing Company has recently been awarded two medals at the 2017 Can Can Awards, a national beer judging competition that focuses on beers that are canned from breweries across the country.

Due South was awarded a Silver medal in the Imperial India Pale Ale category for Category 5 IPA, and a Bronze medal in the American Style Pale Ale category for Citrafied Pale Ale. Category 5 IPA was previously awarded a Gold medal at the 2014 Best Florida Beer Championships, and a Bronze medal at the same event in 2015. This is the first medal win for our recently released Citrafied Pale Ale.

For this second annual competition, 24 judges were tapped from across the Southeast to analyze commercially canned beer: five were professional brewers, 10 had a Beer Judge Certification Program rank of Recognized or higher, and others were experts in the beer industry. Judging took place over five days near Nashville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia, with the competition being sanctioned by the BJCP.

“It's South Florida,” said Mike Halker, owner and founder of Due South Brewing said. “The land of boats, beaches and pools... all places you can't go with glass. Once you throw in all the reasons cans are better than glass for the beer, it's a no-brainer. We're all about the cans.”

The idea of putting interesting and complex beers into a can was first pioneered by Oskar Blues Brewery in 2002, with Due South Brewing Company jumping on the packaging option in 2014, going for cans over bottles. “Cans are lightweight, easily recyclable, keep out light, and act as a type of ‘mini keg’ for our beers,” said Doug Fairall, Due South Brewing’s Brand Marketing Manager.
